I have decided to shake things up a bit a show a bit more of what a Tendai Buddhist service can include. I enjoy the “Daily Service” we typically use here at the Blue Mountain Tendai Sangha. The truth is we have so much more material we could use in a service though. I find many of these other elements deeply meaningful and very beautiful.
We will conduct an Evening service on Monday June 23rd at 7:00 pm. Although this is the same day and time you are used to, the material will be different. The Evening service is unique in that it centers around Amida Nyorai (Amitabha Buddha). Amida is probably the most beloved Buddha in all of Japan and is of course the main Buddha in the Pure Land sects.
Although I selected the elements of this evening’s service, I have been told that the liturgy that Tendai-shu uses for the Evening service comes from Tiantai Patriarch Chih-I. We will incorporate 3 Shomyo pieces into the service which we hope you will enjoy, especially if you haven’t heard this type of chanting before. Shomyo is chanting that sounds a more like singing. Think of Gregorian Chanting but Japanese.
As we will be attending the annual gyo at the NY Betsuin from June 25th – July 5th, this will be our last service for a little while but we will return to our normal schedule once we return.
– We look forward to seeing you then.
